A district court judge said yesterday that Ed O'Bannon, who sells Toyotas in Nevada when he's not revolutionizing amateur athletics, can press on with his class-action licensing suit against the NCAA. Let's just pause and marvel at this anew:The César Chávez of amateur athletes is the guy offering you low APR financing on that late-model Camry. Amazing. The case concerns the NCAA's use of former players' likenesses in commercials, video games, merchandise, etc., a $4 billion market of which those players see not a cent. (The NCAA is staunchly opposed to the commercialism of amateur…

Who is this comely lass with the burnt-orange hair and why was she strategically placed behind the Kansas bench last night? Was she there to distract Jayhawk players from their defensive assignments or as ESPN's Valentine to lonely basketball fans? I missed the Kansas-Texas broadcast last night so I don't know if her presence was specifically addressed on-air, but her all-too-snug t-shirt did seem to be perfectly positioned to catch the eyes of the Jayhawk bench. It would be hard for her not to stand out in that tiny sea of KU blue, but the Lawrence cagers were apparently not impressed.

  • Brian Giles Thinks He's Still Got It

    9 Feb 2010 | 8:12 am
Generally in the game of baseball, when men are pushing 40, it becomes time to hang up the cleats and take up golfing, fishing, or pickleball down in Florida. It's difficult to accept the natural progression of creaky bones, bad backs and sore knees, but it is what it is. They get old and have difficulty competing with scrappy 21-year-old center fielders.Such is not the case with Brian Giles. In fact, he's pretty sure he can still hit and field a baseball at the big league level.Continue reading and comment on this story at Sports Untapped.

A treasure trove of NBA dunk contest video. Tim Varner of 48 Minutes of Hell, agitating for a Spurs trade, perhaps for Tyrus Thomas: "I’m not at all convinced this season’s struggles amount to the end of an era. The Spurs still have time to get back to the top during the Duncan window. But it’s going to take a radical re-approach, and the clock is ticking. But really, the Spurs are one move away from being next year’s popular dark horse selection. Watch it happen. R.C. Buford and his staff rarely make mistakes. And the Richard Jefferson trade wasn’t one of them.

Joe Dumars has long been hailed as one of the best general managers in the NBA, but John Hollinger (Insider) says he's living on his reputation at this point: Check out the résumé and find me a correct decision. Just one. Fire Saunders? Wrong. Hire Michael Curry? Wrong. Trade Chauncey Billups? Wrong. Extend Richard Hamilton? Wrong. Sign Kwame Brown? Wrong. Go after Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva? Wrong again. In two years, the Pistons have gone from one of the best teams in basketball to among the worst. They stink, they're capped out, and they don't have much in the way of young talent;…

  • True Predictions: Congratulations to the New Orleans Saints

    Andru Edwards
    9 Feb 2010 | 11:23 am
Last week I wrote:  “The Saints, to win, must sustain long drives and keep Peyton Manning off the field.” Somewhere between a Colts’ ten-point lead in the first quarter of the Super Bowl to the end of the second quarter, the Colts lost their mojo. Peyton Manning only had six snaps in the second quarter! Then the Colts lost the second half kick-off. Drew Brees spent the second half spraying the ball around to everyone, and the Saints took Super Bowl XLIV, 31-17. 9 Feb 2010 | 11:17 am
Major League Baseball has a long, long history. After being founded in 1869, the game went through decades of changes before becoming what we recognize today as baseball. There is always talk surrounding teams that have been around for decades; about their great moments, their great players, and other memories of yesteryear. When a new player joins the ranks of an historic franchise, he is often told he has “mighty big shoes to fill.” It seems like a lot of time is spent looking at the past and not enough towards the future. With all of the centennial celebrations in the Montreal Canadiens camp over the past year, it seems appropriate to look back into their lengthy history. During another centennial in 1967 – Canada’s centennial – the Canadiens were battling the Toronto Maple Leafs in the Stanley Cup finals in an attempt to win their third straight championship. It would be the last Finals before the expansion and the last time two Canadian teams would face each other until 1986, when the Habs beat the Calgary Flames. By the time the NHL Entry Draft comes around every year, all of the best young skaters are pretty well-known. Every now and then, however, a player falls through the cracks. SI keeps the cover photo a secret — even from the models — until less than 24 hours before it’s revealed. Oh, dear God no. It’s the offseason again. That endless stretch of seven months with hardly any real football in sight. You’re hurt. You’re angry. You’re hateful. We understand. At KSK, hating things is what we do best. Which is why we have our perennial offseason series: THIS WEEK IN FU. This week: M*A*S*H. You see that, M*A*S*H? You see the rating for Sunday night’s game? • An Age Old Question: Is There Room For a Masters Division In MMA?

    9 Feb 2010 | 11:27 am
A lot has been written recently about the age of a few certain fighters and whether or not they should still be competing. Case in point is the bout between UFC Hall of Famers Randy Couture and Mark Coleman. The combined age of both men is an astounding 91 years old. We all know that age is just a number as far as Couture is concerned, but are there enough fighters over the age of 40 to institute a masters division? Dan Severn recently had something to say on this matter. You can check out his thoughts here. At 55 years old, Severn last competed in July of 2009 earning his 90th career victory…

    9 Feb 2010 | 11:25 am
It is always so funny when I talk about the NFL Draft to friends, family, or strangers for that matter.  All the rumors and assumptions start to run wild and before you know it your team is drafting 16 different people in the first round alone. I think fans tend to forget that each team only gets one pick in the first round.  Of course, if they are fortunate enough to own an extra first rounder then they can have as many as 32 different picks in round 1.  Right, 16 + 16 = 32.  I was always bad at math so there is how that number comes about. What many fans also tend to forget is that…

Steam-rolling through the vast majority of the league, the Cavs are sitting pretty at 41-11. They are currently 22-3 at home and have ripped off 11 W's in a row. • Orioles Sign Mark Hendrickson

    9 Feb 2010 | 10:35 am
The Orioles officially re-signed lefty Mark Hendrickson to a one-year, $1.4MM deal today.  Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun first reported the agreement on January 28th.  The deal pays $1.2MM in 2010 and includes a $1.2MM club option for 2011 with a $200K buyout.  The 35-year-old will take on a relief role in 2010, though the contract contains bonuses for games started.  The Orioles made room for Hendrickson by designating reliever Armando Gabino for assignment. As a reliever in 2009, Hendrickson posted a 3.44 ERA, 6.1 K/9, and 2.3 BB/9 in 55 innings.

Ohman can be very tough on lefties - he held them to a .200/.257/.314 line in 114 plate appearances in 2008.  The Blue Jays and Royals also showed interest in Ohman this winter, reported Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe.

Receiving an email titled “Chicago Cubs Season Tickets” from an individual at @cubs.com, I knew what the mail said: Dear Season Ticket Waiting List Member, I am happy to inform you… My number had come up – the Cubs have Season Ticket packages available! This same mechanism is how I became a Bears season ticket holder in the mid-90’s.  But that email invitation at a good time, where I was glad to pony up the dollars and could make plenty of games. I only had those tickets for a few years becuase I quickly realized freezing my ass off…

The Super Bowl Prediction System — Super Bowl XLIV is a toss-up All the betting lines favor the Colts right now by five or six points, but in my book it’s a toss-up. If I were a betting man, I’d take the Saints and the points. But if you do that, don’t blame me if you lose. It’s that close. In my Super Bowl prediction system there are 12 different indicators, each one taken by itself predicts the Super Bowl winner 56% to 69% of the time. Taken collectively, the indicators have an even better track record. The system favors the team that wins the most indicators…

Cubs GM Jim Hendry said at the Cubs Convention that last year’s off season player market moved slower than previous years, with many deals coming in the final days before spring training. He expected this year to be similar to last and so far this has proven to be so. So we Cub fans have been asked to be patient as the final pieces of the 2010 Cubs squad come together. Problem is, very few if any of the players the Cubs are rumored to be interested in, interest me. On Twitter the other day, I said Jim Hendry sometimes needs to be saved from himself. My comment was in reaction to the signing…

Tom Ricketts is a smart, likeable guy. He talks a good game for the most part, but most of what I hear lately has very little to do with winning baseball in 2010.  I heard a Lou soundbite from the Cubs Convention: ‘We have a good team up here in Chicago’ he said. And Lou is absolutley right. The 2010 Cubs appear to be a good – not great – team. They have some good players, if they play up to expectations. But with most of the off-season additions so far having been by subtraction (Bradley, Miles & Gregg all gone), I haven’t seen or heard much to indicate…

When I mentioned to my wife the Olympics were coming up, the first thing she said was, “Oh boy, I love figure skating.” This caused me to roll my eyes, and instantly try to think of excuses and things I could be doing during the pairs long program.

As much as I hate @insidethebcs I like the new logo. Too bad it's still the worst way to decide a national champion ever. # This is eerie once again ESPN2 70-68 with 22 seconds left. Indiana at Illinois. # Tied at 68 with 12 seconds left. This kind of game makes me excited for March Madness. # Turn on to ESPN2 for the end of uconn Marquette. # Just polished off the Olympic schedule http://www.hdsportsguide.com/olympics/ # Check that the map is for Jan 31. # Just got my first bag of crap from woot! # Updated world cup schedule with the full channel line up for the world cup.

The month of your birth influences your chances of becoming a professional sportsperson, an Australian researcher has found.  Senior research fellow Dr. Adrian Barnett from Queensland University of Technology's Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation studies the seasonal patterns of population health and found the month you were born in could influence your future health and fitness. The results of the study are published in the book Analysing Seasonal Health Data, by Barnett, co-authored by researcher Professor Annette Dobson from the University of Queensland. Switzerland has a long tradition of bobsledding and the Swiss Bobsleigh Federation has a remarkable record at international competitions. Currently, Switzerland even boasts two reigning world champions: Ivo Rüegg in the two-man bob and junior world champion Sabina Hafner. Moreover, pilot Beat Hefti won last year’s world cup season – also in the two-man bob. To be better than the rest, the athletes not only need talent and experience, but also a fast bobsled. No one knows this better than former bobsledder and leader of the “CITIUS” project, Christian Reich: “for a pilot, being able…
  • Exercise May Help Schizophrenia Patients

    3 Feb 2010 | 7:23 pm
Potentially beneficial brain changes (an increase in the volume of an area known as the hippocampus) occur in response to exercise both in patients with schizophrenia and healthy controls, according to a report in the February issue of Archives of General Psychiatry, one of the JAMA/Archives journals. The findings suggest that the brain retains some plasticity, or ability to adapt, even in those with psychotic disorders. Schizophrenia is known to be associated with a reduced volume in the area of the brain known as the hippocampus, which helps regulate emotion and memory, according to…

    1 Feb 2010 | 6:23 pm
In this World Cup year, when football (soccer) passions are running high, supporters might be forgiven for objecting to every decision to award a foul against their team, made by referees. But they might also have a point. Researchers at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University have researched all recorded fouls in three major football competitions over seven years. They discovered an ambiguous foul is more likely to be attributed to the taller of two players. Dr. Niels van Quaquebeke and Dr. Steffen Giessner, scientists at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University began…

    30 Jan 2010 | 12:11 pm
Bioengineers have taken a small step toward improving physical recovery in stroke patients by showing that a key feature of how limb motion is encoded in the nervous system plays a crucial role in how new motor skills are learned. Published in a recent issue of Neuron, a Harvard-based study about the neural learning elements responsible for motor learning may help scientists design rehabilitation protocols in which motor adaptation occurs more readily, potentially allowing for a more rapid recovery. Neuroscientists have long understood that the brain's primary motor cortex and the body's…

  • Orioles: What a relief...Hendrickson signs

    Peter Schmuck
    9 Feb 2010 | 10:31 am
The Orioles obviously didn't want another big snowstorm to delay the signing of reliever Mark Hendrickson, so they got it done a little while ago and designated right-hander Armando Gabino for assignment. Both moves had been pretty obvious for several weeks, but some logistical issues kept the situation on hold. The O's also just announced that they have signed left-handed reliever Will Ohman to a minor league deal and invited him to major league training camp. That also had been percolating for awhile. Dan Connolly reported last week that the O's had offered Ohman a contract and Jeff Zrebiec…
  • Orioles: Roster all but set

    Peter Schmuck
    9 Feb 2010 | 6:43 am
I'm growing nostalgic for the days when the Orioles brought 37 pitchers to major league camp and then didn't feel like they had enough so they signed Adam Eaton. This year's spring training roster is a little more balanced and there are no wide open spaces on the Orioles' depth chart. Don't know if that's necessarily a good thing. When the major intrigues of the spring are whether Chad Moeller can hold onto the reserve catcher role and who will be the left-handed specialist in the bullpen, it's going to be hard to generate a lot of excitement during the early weeks of spring camp. I'm…

I'm chuckling a little bit at the notion that it's another sign of the Orioles apocalypse that I've got no roster moves to comment on today. My God people, are there teams out there that make a move every day in the offseason? And, while I'm on the subject, just which quality teams are burning up the headlines right now? I just stopped over at ESPN.com and you've got a choice between Cliff Lee's minor foot surgery, Steve Phillips' comments about sex rehab (which I will be reading, by the way), and the Brewers building a statue of Bud Selig outside Miller Park. If you want, I could pull a few…

Good news. I just found my car. I'd been searching for it for a couple of days after the big storm and finally located it right in front of the house. Now -- thanks to a couple of charitable neighbors (Chip and Kathleen) who helped me dig it out -- I no longer have an excuse for lying around the house wondering what Jim Caldwell was thinking when he sent Matt Stover out to try that 51-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter last night. No disrespect to Matt, who is a prince and one of the greatest kickers ever, but that wasn't the kind of percentage play you make when you're ahead in the…

    Peter Schmuck
    6 Feb 2010 | 7:09 pm
Less than two weeks remain before the first workout for pitchers and catchers and the Orioles continue to search for a southpaw reliever to compete with Alberto Castillo, Wilfrido Perez and non-roster invitee Mike Hinckley for the situational lefty spot in the bullpen. Will Ohman is the guy that the Orioles really want and they watched him throw a bullpen session in Arizona about 10 days ago. Ohman, a 32-year-old who had a 5.84 ERA in 21 appearances for the Los Angeles Dodgers last season, is trying to prove that he’s healthy after having elbow and shoulder surgeries. The Orioles have…

  • Super Bowl XLIV Recap

    Sam Taggart
    9 Feb 2010 | 5:32 am
Congrats to the real winners of Super Bowl XLIV: CBS. This year’s Super Bowl was reportedly the most-watched TV event ever. CBS estimates that the game was watched by 106.5 million viewers, which is 600,000 more than watched the previous record-holder, the “M*A*S*H” series finale in 1983. I’m not surprised. While the Colts and Saints are two relatively small market teams, both are very likable from a football fan’s point of view. Further, most would agree that the Colts and Saints were really the best two teams in the league. The Colts started 14-0 and the Saints…

    5 Feb 2010 | 5:54 am
A few days ago a reporter called and asked how I would advise a professional athlete if he wanted to endorse a hot-button topic in a forum as big as a Super Bowl audience. My answer was not textbook public relations. (I will reveal the outlet and topic upon its publication). The reasons that athletes and coaches endorse products and services are as varied as the people themselves. Some do it because they patronize and truly believe in said organizations. Others pitch products because it fattens their bank accounts; some make themselves available for endorsements to keep their face in front of…

Carter can’t smile with these two just yet (latimes.com) Emmitt Smith, Jerry Rice, Russ Grimm, Dick LeBeau, Ricky Jackson, Floyd Little, and John Randle are all deserving of their recent election into the NFL Hall Of Fame Class of 2010, but one man that without a doubt should be getting inducted in Canton with them this summer is former Buckeye and Minnesota Vikings wide receiver, Cris Carter. Taking this villain thing to 11 Three weeks ago, I wondered if the Buckeyes, with the return of Turner, had a potential run for the Big Ten title in them. At the time, I thought Thad’s crew could optimistically go 10-2 to finish at 13-5, but with the Spartans unbeaten at 5-0 and looking near invincible in conference play a share of the title was likely out of the question. But then Kalin Lucas went down and Michigan State dropped two straight on the road while the Buckeyes moved their conference winning streak to seven games, getting hot at the same time teams like Illinois, Wisconsin…

    9 Feb 2010 | 8:38 am
The NBA 's HORSE competition is pretty much a joke, and this year it should be even more so. It looks like the league is trying to set up Kevin Durant with an easy win, by putting in at least one guy who just plain can not shoot well at all. Rajon Rondo is one of the best point guards in the league, but he has one weakness: He can't shoot. I'm as big a fan as anyone, but Rondo has never been a good shooter. So why put him in the HORSE competition? Kevin Durant won last year, and he'll be in it again, and Omri Casspi is also competing. I'm guessing Rondo gets knocked out pretty…

At the end of the first quarter of tonight’s game against the Los Angeles Lakers, Rudy Gay of the Memphis Grizzlies launched a shot from past half court in an attempt to beat the buzzer. Gay successfully got the shot off in time. So much time that there was still a full seven seconds left on the clock. After the shot bricked off the backboard, the Lakers took the ball to the other end of the court, where Kobe Bryant naturally drained a 3 pointer at the buzzer. Now we’ve all hit the wrong button in a basketball video game at some point. I myself am the king of launching full-court…

The Africa Cup of Nations is underway, and based on this video of the Mozambique goalie flipping face first over the ball rather than securing it, it appears to be the only major soccer tournament to take place using a ball filled with lead. Somehow the goalkeeper managed to dive back to the ball after missing it, but the teammate who met him there surely wanted to kick the guy’s face in for flailing about the place like that. There must be better ways to showboat and show your general lack of respect for gravity. And for…
  • Tennessee fans riot after Lane Kiffin bolts for USC (video)

    Jonathan Sacks
    12 Jan 2010 | 9:35 pm
I’ll admit, when I first heard that Tennessee fans were rioting and causing mayhem after Lane Kiffin announced he was leaving for USC, I figured the reports of the size of the crowd were exaggerated. But unless the video above is from the 2010 Knoxville Night-time Marathon, there were a ton of people who turned out to run Kiffin out of town (or to keep him from leaving, I’m not sure which). With Lane Kiffin’s address being posted online, and reports such as this one from Renaldo Woolridge of tear gas being used on fans, this will certainly only be the first video to come out…

"Everyone has such a passion for living. They deserve this so much."--Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints' quarterback and Most Valuable Player of Super Bowl XLIV, discussing the city and the people of New Orleans. Let's take a look at the New Orleans Saints' win over the Indianapolis Colts yesterday and their building blocks of success. VisionNew Orleans Saints were playing for an entire city and state. Brees said the Saints "played for so much more than just ourselves. We played for our city ... and the entire Who Dat nation that was behind us all the way.""We have a 1-year old son, and we're…
  • Alabama Crimson Tide Rolls to 2009 BCS Championship with Mental Conditioning Program

    26 Jan 2010 | 11:55 am
With great interest and anticipation, I drove Sunday, January 24, 2010 to Birmingham, Alabama to attend a celebratory program to award Alabama Crimson Tide Head Coach Nick Saban with the 2009 Leadership Innovation Award. The program and award highlighted the accomplishments of the Alabama football team. During the acceptance speech, Coach Saban directly attributed his championship team’s chemistry and success to a mental conditioning program he employed. The mental conditioning program provided a "success mindset" that resulted in a BCS Championship win against the Texas Longhorns in the…
  • Tony Romo: Dallas Cowboys' Quarterback Learns About Accountability

    11 Jan 2010 | 6:18 am
"It's very easy in this profession to look at somebody else and blame. It's almost difficult to make yourself accountable to the rest of the guys. But when trouble arrived, we stayed committed to the plan. There wasn't all the little bickering and guys stayed committed to the team."I've only been playing for four years now, but we played two of them before and I felt like one of them was my fault. So I didn't feel like this was the most impossible thing ever that everyone made it out to be. The other thing is, if you're good enough you'll win. If I wasn't good enough to win a playoff game as…

When I arrived at Texas Tech, the football program was on NCAA probation and the graduation rate was far below the national average. However, in the past 10 years, Tech has been to 10 straight bowl games, has the third best record in the Big 12 Conference, and has the highest graduation rate for football players of any public institution in the country.Over the past several months, there have been individuals in the Texas Tech…

I suppose it was inevitable.  After all, when companies are spending millions of dollars on athletes' endorsements and subjected multiple millions more to the risk of those same athletes doing something that would then tarnish the image of the companies, insurance would enter the picture. Many companies take out death and disability insurance, insuring their companies against loss in the event an athlete endorser dies or becomes injured while under contract.  More recently, companies have been insuring against loos to their brand's reputation or the company's actual or potential…

You may recall that while onthe campaign trail President Barack Obama expressed a strong desire to see a college football playoff.  Most observers, including this one, dismissed it at the time as just another bit of campaign pandering.  Well, apparently there are more votes in Utah, Idaho and Ft. Worth than anyone has ever believed, because the Obama Justice Department has decided to look into the antitrust implications of the BCS. In a letter to Utah Senator Orrin Hatch, obtained by AP, Assistant Attorney General Ronald Welch said the Justice Department is reviewing the antitrust…

I've been away for a while, hence the lack of posting, so I'll just post a few links for your weekend reading pleasure.  Before I get to the links, I will tell you that I spent last weekend in Evanston and attended the Northwestern - Illinois game.  A great win for the Cats in an absolutely packed and wild Welsh-Ryan; can't remember ever hearing it that loud.  While in Evanston, I picked up a copy of the Tribune.  Didn't know its  turned into a tabloid.  I know the Tribune Co. is bankrupt, but it's sad to witness the long, slow death of a once great newspaper.

On Rick Pitino's radio show tonight, in a discussion of the opening game opponent for the Cardinal's new downtown arena scheduled to open in the fall, Pitino gave out a possible retirement, one a little bit further out than many Cards' fans had been anticipating.  Pitino said that Louisville is in discussions with Duke to be the opening opponent for the debut of the new Cardinal Arena (the naming rights are still available if you have a spare $10-20 million a year to memorialize yourself).   The discussions are for a three year contract with Duke to play in Louisville in 2010,…

Last Tuesday I had the pleasure of meeting with 30 or 40 girls ages 5 to 11 at Girls, Inc. of Orange County. What I had planned was to show them the video of the 2004 US Olympic Trials steeplechase, talk about believing in yourself and dealing with adversity (as related to the stories of different women in the race) and then take them into a larger room with mats to do some core exercises and sprint drills and even a game or two. My biggest fear was that I wouldn't be able to get them to talk and participate in the discussion after the video. I didn't want them to be bored or…

Erin wished in May 2008 that the three plaintiffs in the UC Davis wrestling case would appeal the decision of the lower court to dismiss the lawsuit in which the student-athletes allege Title IX violations after the school eliminated their opportunity to wrestle. And this week her wish came true. The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals reinstated the lawsuit* after disagreeing with the lower court's rationale that the students had to inform their institution of the discrimination first. But as Erin pointed out in her analysis of the case, this standard, established by SCOTUS's decision in Gebser, a…

This is one partnership that really offers an excellent and natural fit between the property and the sponsor. This concept has been consistent throughout all of their various marketing platforms. In fact, Under Armour has rarely endorsed specific athletes, instead opting to focus on the imagery of intense workouts and…

For triathletes, collecting telemetry received from devices during practice sessions and competition is nothing new. For example, today many competitors have computers attached to their bikes that display power/wattage, cadence, speed, and distance information helpful for improved efficient training and performance. Just like in cycling, there is now a technology that allows a swimmer to receive telemetry about their technique, and matched with mental training, can assist the tracking and training leading to improvement. Most of the emphasis on training relies on physical repetition as the…

It's Super Bowl sunday. The Indianapolis Colts take on the New Orleans Saints. It's going to be huge. It is big business, but is it the biggest annual sports event in the world? Before we answer that, let's look at some of the stats associated with Super Bowl XLIV (from the Sunday Times). A 30 second ad for tonight's game costs $2.8m - almost 70 times the cost in 1967 ($42, 500). 4 million Americans have bought a new TV for the game. An incredible 350 pizza slices per second, 11 million lbs of potato chips and 4, 000 tons of popcorn will be consumed! The average American will spend $50 on…

Hunter S. Thompson once wrote of college football recruiting, “It is uglier than most things. It is normally perceived as some kind of cruel and shallow money trench … a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free and good men die like dogs, for no good reason.” Alright, truth be told, Thompson was actually discussing the television industry when he penned this phrase, but it’s certainly no less applicable to recruiting. And if the thieves and pimps run free the other 364 days of the year, one can only imagine the mayhem that takes place within the inner…
  • Stafford’s knee rehab is coming along just fine, thanks

There’s only one thing that could distract us from the round-the-clock coverage of Dwight Freeney’s ankle injury, and that’s Matthew Stafford. And his girlfriend. And her boobs. Wait, that’s four things. Regardless, we thank the fellas over at Deadspin for working tirelessly to stay on top of the ongoing saga of the injured Detroit Lions quarterback and his spinnerific squeeze, the now-famous Kelly Hall. And by staying on top of the story, we mean receiving anonymous e-mails with photos of the couple. If it sounds like we’re bitter, that’s because we are.
  • 4 out of 5 Kansas fans prefer Reed’s sis over Money

With a potential No. 1 ranking on the line Saturday when their team heads west to face rival K-State, you would think Kansas basketball fans would have their attention focused on the tough test that looms in Manhattan. Alas, you would be wrong. Not when they have Eddie Money and Lacie Reed to discuss. Lacie and Tyrel Reed While we generally try to avoid college football and basketball message boards as much as humanly possible, we couldn’t resist heading over to KUSports.com to peruse the local reaction to the Money Man’s hair-raising National Anthem performance during…
  • Finally, media can turn attention to what’s really important

    Phoebe B. Beebe
    25 Jan 2010 | 8:32 am
Thank goodness those annoying games are now over. With Minnesota’s overtime loss to New Orleans in Sunday’s NFC championship game behind them, our nation’s sports media can now turn their full attention to the only story they really care about: Brett Favre’s retirement. Rachel Nichols is likely booking her flight to Hattiesburg even as I type this. Oh, and the reason the Jets lost to the Colts was because they didn’t throw the ball enough to Braylon Edwards. Don’t believe us? Just ask Braylon Edwards.
  • We’ve officially hit rock bottom (again) in the Tiger saga

    20 Jan 2010 | 12:36 pm
Every time we think we’ve witnessed the low point in the mainstream media’s “coverage” of Tiger Woods’ recent foibles, we find out just how much we’ve underestimated the industry’s ability to circle the drain of sports journalism. Take Tuesday night, for example. Those who hopelessly indulged in ESPN2’s orgy of college basketball and Australian Open coverage no doubt noticed the painfully convoluted crawl that the network ran … and ran … and ran some more. It said something to the effect that “Source confirms to blogger that…

  • Can a Recruit Save Ernie Kent’s Job?

    Keith Becker
    2 Feb 2010 | 6:35 pm
Among the countless Twitter rumblings I came across today, these two tweets from Matt Prehm of DuckTerritory.com (@Prehmmr) stuck out like a sore thumb: ·2011 Top 5 BB recruit Toney Wroten JR has informed me UO dropped in his list because of job stability w/Ernie Kent and concerns of firing. ·Wroten had Oregon as his favorite, but dropped them down. This was before the UCLA and USC games. Wroten is very impressed with Kent. First of all, I’m not exactly sure which characteristic of Kent’s has impressed him, but putting that aside, is this news something Athletic Director Mike Bellotti…

Here is part two of what will be a three-part interview series with the three Oregon players who participated in the Senior Bowl (Blount, Canfield and Ed Dickson). You may be curious how I was in Mobile, Alabama, and Eugene at the same time on last week.  As good as I like to think I am, I’m not that good. My friend and former colleague, Jason Roberts, of PRISM Press Group was at Media Night Monday evening at Battleship Memorial Park and was treated to a special interview with Oregon State University’s Sean Canfield. Here, Canfield discusses how he feels after the opening day of…

Why this guy was so intent about staying in the Oregon student section is beyond me. At least we got to laugh at his expense. Thanks, Puddles. A couple of things. The Ducks looked great today. Thursday too. It was an all-around great weekend for Oregon basketball. Almost too good. The past few weeks put a lot of fans on the “fire Ernie Kent” bandwagon, including myself, even though I’d never really been a fan of his before. We all know Ernie can recruit, but he’s had problems developing that talent over the years. Well this weekend, Kent has flipped a 180, getting the…
  • The Win is Nice, But Nice Enough to Save Ernie’s Job?

    Keith Becker
    29 Jan 2010 | 11:50 am
Funny headline from Yahoo: Oregon gets uglier than usual for a good cause. This Oregon team threw themselves after loose balls, crashed the offensive and defensive boards with reckless abandon and at the same time, somehow managed to run a much smoother, controlled offense that featured several pick and rolls (even making contact with the defenders!) – something I figured as a lost art for the Ducks. As much as I’ve criticized Kent the past few weeks, I have to give him some credit tonight. He had his team ready to go, laid out a solid game plan, kept them interested through halftime and…
